Main Task: Double Page Spread Texual Analysis

Denotation

The magazine double page spread consists of a colour photograph of a man with his arms up simulating his arms like a plane. It is a medium close up shot showing his head arms and waist. He is standing up and his upper leg is visible in the shot. The background of the photograph is white and the picture cover the whole left side of the double page spread. On the right side page of the man I see columns of text and also a subject, strap-line and headline.

Character

The cover photograph is of a successful Hip-Hop rapper called ‘T.I.’; he also comes under the categories of rapper, songwriter, record producer and actor showing he is also diverse.

Composition

He is posed in a very ‘I’m fly way’ showing that he is cool headed and calm as if he does not have a single care in the world. His pose, body language, and clothing, are very calm, collected and casual as if he is the ‘man’.

Costume

His clothing is a patterned shirt that he is wearing on top of an immaculate white tee, he is also wearing a brown chain which stands out because of the way he is posed he is also wearing light brown trousers. This costume has been chosen carefully to appeal to the target audience of the magazine, who are most likely to be hip-hop listeners. The clothing worn is similar to costumes he uses to promote his new music videos showing the image he portrays.

NVC:

His non-verbal communication is also calm and collected. His head is tilted showing to the audience he is in his moment.

Lighting:

The lighting is High key, to anchor the text of ‘The summer Preview’.

Setting:

There is little setting, however the white background can connote paradise and somewhere being forever sunny.

Target Audience

Considering all of these points, the likely target audience would be people (male and female, though more of a male audiences than female) aged 18-25. They would have good knowledge of the popular culture and a definite interest in hip-hop and rap especially. They are more likely to be interested in it and maybe have an interest in the artist that is being featured.

Main Task: Introduction

Yo! My name is Richard. I am a AS media student and I have started analysing the codes & conventions of a Music magazine. Why? Because as my main task I need to produce a final front cover, a final contents page and a DPS (Double Page spread). As I really enjoy the vibrant and motivational hip-hop culture, I knew this would be this best path to go down as I find it to be my favourite genre, this also allows me to be able to understand how to convey the genre of hip-hop in to a music magazine as these are the types of magazines I would buy. My favourite type of hip-hop is alternative hip-hop, which refers to hip-hop artist/groups that refuse to conform to any traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangster, bass, hardcore and party rap. Which instead they can merge genres such as jazz, soul, reggae, as well as rock and even funk. I understand that Hip-Hop may not be as popular as Pop but I know that it will have its loyal audience and people who love Hip-Hop like me. The target audience that I am aiming for is 19-28 the "Young Generation" this target audience would be mostly male. Even though my target audience is the younger generation I still believe that the older audience might read it also.

Main Task: Front Cover Texual analysis

Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of a woman looking directly at the camera. It is a medium long shot showing her head, arms and waist. She is standing up against a wall her thighs are visible in the shot. The background of the photograph is made up of pale blue tiles, and the photograph cover the whole of the magazine cover. Behind the women there is the Vibe masthead, and in front of her are four different cover-lines in red and black. The photographed women’s name is in black and is written in bold. A bar code is visible in the bottom right corner.

Masthead:
Vibe’s masthead is very distinctive and simplistic: The colour of the masthead is red and the word is bold. The font used is a san serif font, the letters are spaced and are not to close too each other.

Character:
The cover photograph is of the successful American singer ‘Beyonce’. Who is known for singing RnB she used to be part of the successful group, but later on became a solo-artist.
Composition:
She is posed in a very ‘cove over here let me show you something’ kind of way. Her pose, body language and clothing, are very sexually suggestive and provocative. The way she is positions allows the target audience not only to see her shape but her cleavage, the position enhances her shape.

Costume:
Her clothing is a white blouse which is wet and some parts are see through, showing lots of cleavage, she is wearing black sequenced hot pants. This costume has been chosen carefully to appeal to the target audience of the magazine, who are most likely to be male. The clothing is similar to the costumes she has used to promote her new music. She is dressed with simplicity as she only has two gold bracelets on no chain or earrings. The way the way the attire is dressed on her anchors the main words of ‘Beyonce strips down for summer’.

NVC:
Her Non verbal communication is also very seductive. Her mouth is open displaying her light red lips and white teeth, and she is looking slightly at the camera still giving direct contact. Her head is up showing she has dominance as she can over look things and does not look interrogated like people could stereotype.

Lighting:
The lighting is high key, as the photograph is meant to daytime. The lighting also is used to highlight that she is wet and has water dripping down her.

Setting:
There is a little setting, however the background connotes a shower room as the artist is wet and there are tiles.

Cover-lines:
The main cover-line that relates to her photograph says: ‘Beyonce Strips Down for summer 10+ pages of B like you’ve never seen her’. This would target to males as they want to see more than what is on the cover which is already seductive. The cover line can have multiple meanings either stripping down as in nudity or stripping down on the scarves and winter jackets also making it appeal to women as they may see beyonce as a fashion icon and may want too know what people like beyonce who are successful and get attention dress like for summer. The other cover line tells us the magazine does not concentrate on the artist but on the theme of summer as the other cover line reads ‘All-city summer guide: New York Atlanta Miami and more’ showing this issue of the magazine can be seen as a guide on were to go, how to act and also how to dress in summer.

Target Audience:
Considering all of these points, the likely target audience would be people (male and female, though more male audience members than female ages 18-34 years old has an aspiration for urban music, entertainment, culture and lifestyle.
